Wrinkle Creams Vs. Wrinkle Fillers: Which is right for you?

wrinkle fillers vs wrinkle creamsIn the ever-intensifying war against aging, we’ve got a few more allies on our side than we’ve had in decades past. Anti-aging wrinkle creams have been around to enhance youthful appearance for quite some time. It’s a tried-and-true method that serves many people well. However, wrinkle fillers – injectable treatments that fill in the wrinkle itself – have grown in popularity as an alternative to classic cream treatments.

If you find yourself debating which treatment is right for you, it’s worth considering the pros and cons of each approach to wrinkle defense.

A crash course in wrinkle-fillers

Juvéderm

This hyaluronic acid-based substance is used to increase volume, decrease wrinkles and plump up the lips. Lasting up to 8 months, this wrinkle filler is used primarily by users 35 and older. Juvéderm typically costs from $400.

Restylane

This hyaluronic acid-based substance (in gel particle form) has similar effects as Juvéderm. Popular for enhancing lips, adding volume and smoothing out wrinkles, Restylane lasts about 6 months. Popular with persons over 35, Restylane costs $500 and up.

Sculptra

This synthetic poly-L-lactic acid is primarily used to give a boost to the cheek area. Best results occur in persons over 40, and treatments can last up to 2 years. Most users pay in the range of $3200 and up.

Botox®

Perhaps the most well-known of the wrinkle-fillers, Botox is a protein produced from botulinum bacterium. Users use it to improve appearance of forehead lines and crow’s feet around the eyes. Lasting about 4 months, users can pay $300 and up (sometimes less on a per unit basis) for a full treatment.

These wrinkle-fillers are all popular for one compelling reason: they work! The treatments last for months, and by most accounts, produce attractive results.

What about side effects?

Side effects from one wrinkle-filler to the next are similar. Bruising, swelling, allergic reaction, and skin bumps are a few possible side effects with each of these treatments. Users of Botox may find that their eyelids temporarily droop in addition to the aforementioned effects. In addition, as all treatments are injected via needle, those with anxieties about shots should be prepared.

Finally, the costs of maintaining these treatments are quite high, and are not within the reach of every person wishing to maintain a youthful appearance.

Tried and true: anti-wrinkle creams

Anti-wrinkle creams are the obvious alternative to upscale wrinkle filler treatments. The advantages of anti-wrinkle creams are pretty simple. Depending on the type of product you use, you’re probably paying less on a per-unit basis to use quality anti-wrinkle creams (although in the long run, this is not always the case).

The ingredients in the best wrinkle creams have been shown to work to varying degrees in lab after lab. Some feel that those using injectable treatments have a less natural appearance, and prefer that their facial features remain wholly unaltered. For these persons, wrinkle cream treatments are ideal.

Additionally, anti-wrinkle creams have few, if any, side effects.

You’ll save money, but what’s the “cost” of anti-wrinkle creams?

There are potential downsides to using wrinkle cream one must consider. Relative to wrinkle fillers, the results are not immediate. Continued usage over long periods of time is necessary to experience optimal results. Also, users sometimes must try several different products before settling on one that works best for their complexions.
