Where Do Crows Feet Come From?

Crows Feet CausesLet’s face it: once we hit our 30s, the wrinkles and fine lines begin to make their appearance. It begins ever so gradually, but once it does, we feel the need to stop nature in its tracks. The first wrinkles to appear are usually crow’s feet, those tiny lines that seem to burst forth from around your eyes, especially when you erupt into a wide smile or squint for a clearer view. While it is inevitable that crow’s feet will eventually form, there are some factors that speed up their arrival.

The most common way that we hasten the appearance of crow’s feet is by being cavalier about sun exposure. It’s not always convenient to lather on the sunscreen, and we don’t always have a full-coverage floppy hat handy. It’s easy to forget that UV rays beam right through the clouds, so come winter, we aren’t as vigilant about applying the SPF 15 moisturizer as perhaps in the summer months. Of course, those with fairer complexions are more prone to sun damage, so they must be more cautious than those with darker complexions with more natural pigment.

If you’re trying to avoid accelerating the development of crow’s feet, you might consider investing in a nice large pair of sunglasses, and keeping your eyeglass/contacts prescription up-to-date. Squinting is one of the causes of crow’s feet, as the constant contraction of the ocularis orbis muscles around the eyes can eventually lead to permanent wrinkles.

Smokers: pay attention! It’s not making you look any younger. Smoking damages the elastin and collagen fibers beneath the skin, and chokes off blood flow and oxygen.

There are some ways to stave off the relentless march of wrinkles and crow’s feet. Eating nutritious foods and staying hydrated are just two ways, and it’s also fantastic for your health in general. Proper diet and lots of water are not the panacea, though, and should be combined with a quality eye cream designed to minimize the appearance of crow’s feet.

Eye cream quality varies greatly from brand to brand, and it isn’t always easy to tell the difference. More expensive creams may not necessarily be more effective than bargain brands, but a truly excellent cream may be worth a few extra dollars. There are literally hundreds from which to choose, so we don’t blame you if the selection is overwhelming!
