Vitamin C / L-Ascorbic Acid / Ascorbyl Palmitate

vitamin CEveryone has heard of Vitamin C, and it is commonly thought of as a nutritional supplement and something that is found in citrus fruits such as oranges. L-Ascorbic Acid and Ascorbyl Palmitate are not pure forms of Vitamin C but are very similar compounds which same many of the same properties as the purer forms. Although when thinking about vitamins most people think of either getting their vitamins through a good diet or by taking a daily supplement, it is also possible to add these vitamin rich compounds to creams and lotions to allow them to work directly on the surface of the skin.

Why Vitamin C

The reason why manufacturers add vitamins to anti-aging products is because they are well known for their antioxidant properties. Antioxidant is the name given to any chemical which fights and neutralizes external factors such as pollution and sun damage. Antioxidants can help eliminate these free radicals from the skin and can help boost the skin’s own methods for repairing and renewing itself. Collagen is a critical component in the skin as it helps to keep skin plumped up and evens out wrinkles, and ridding the skin of free radicals by the use of antioxidants can help increase collagen production too. There is little in the way of clinical evidence that antioxidants rubbed on the skin make a large difference to the aging process, although there is strong evidence that when taken orally they help with things like immune system. However, most anti-aging cream manufacturers do not use antioxidants on their own but add them into their products with other products which help produce the same effects. As antioxidants are a naturally occurring substance and we eat them every day in fruit and other products, it is certainly true to say that there is no danger whatsoever in using them in a facial cream product.
