DMAE or Deanol

DMAE is the short chemical name for Dimethylaminoethanol, which is also sometimes marketed under the brand name of Deanol. It works by improving the ways cells communicate with one another and is used in drug form to treat conditions such as attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, Alzheimer’s disease and autism. When added to an anti-wrinkle cream or lotion, DMAE shows good effects against signs of aging such as sagging or loose skin.

How Does it Work

DMAE works to reduce signs of aging by improving tone in the muscles which lie under the skin. If the muscles are kept toned and healthy, the skin which lies on top will appear more youthful and toned. Good muscle tone on the skin is one of the things that decreases with age and as we get older additional help may be needed to maintain the tautness of the skin. Unlike many of the other ingredients in anti-aging creams, there has been a substantial amount of research into DMAE and independent trials have shown good effects on appearance of wrinkles when applied daily for a period of up to 16 weeks.

As well as demonstrating good effects on wrinkles and fine lines, creams containing deanol or DMAE was also shown to be effective on sagging skin on the neck, dark circles under the eyes and on the firmness of the skin in general. The other surprising results from the clinical testing was that the effects of the DMAE lasted even after the users had stopped applying the cream, although continuous use delivers the best results. Independent clinical tests showing such good results for a skincare ingredient are rare, so products using DMAE and Deanol should be considered carefully and weighed up against other similar products which may contain active ingredients which are not as thoroughly tested or which contain ingredients which have not demonstrated their capabilities in independent testing.
